FireSmart is about lowering the risk of wildfire with simple steps around your home, your property and the community. Wildfire risk in BC is growing each year, and homes that are prepared are more likely to be left standing.
In the summer of 2020, the Village of Hazelton and the District of New Hazelton hired a FireSmart educator to help residents learn how to protect their homes. That project wrapped up in September 2020.
Ten ways to FireSmart your home
- Move firewood 10 to 30 metres from your home.
- Clean leaves and pine needles off your roof and out of your gutters.
- Make a wildfire evacuation plan with your household.
- Keep grass cut shorter than 10 cm.
- Trim trees and plants that hang over your roof.
- Know what kinds of trees grow on your property.
- Make sure everyone at home knows where to shut off the gas, power and water.
- Check your roof and chimney. A clean, protected roof greatly improves the chance your home survives.
- Move propane tanks 10 to 30 metres from your home.
- Do a FireSmart assessment of your home and property.
